The use of cacao has a rich history, interwoven into many facets of the ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures. Cacao was so important to the Mayan culture that it was not only reserved for the rich & powerful, but accessible & regularly consumed by everyone in their society. Cacao was treated as a sacred food & a social centerpiece, used to accompany rituals, treat illness & has even been used as a currency.
To this day, the growing of chocolate is an important cultural practice & family tradition for many indigenous groups. Ninety percent of the world’s chocolate today is grown on small family farms of 25 acres or less.
Not all chocolate is created equal & there is a VAST difference between those chocolate snickers bars & organic cacao. Cacao is literally ‘nature’s chocolate’, the original form of chocolate, enjoyed for thousands of years!
When enjoyed in an unadulterated way (sans sugar & correctly prepared) cacao can be of significant benefit to the body.
